New Elevator Codes The following are items that are the owner/contractor's responsibility. These issues will be listed followed by the code section. They reference in the group III ANSI A17.1 elevator codes.
A. Check Machine Room and Prints
1. Disconnect switch and equip. numbered more than two (620-51 & 3050b8)
2. Disconnect clearance - 42" (620-72)
3. Disconnect Grounding (620-82)
4. Door Size 30" x 72" min (300.2)
5. Door Fire Rating Tagged (equal to hoistway rating) (101.1a (2) )
6. Natural or Mechanical Ventilation
7. Light Switch within 18" of lock side of door (where convenient) (620-22)
8. Lighting 10ftc at floor level (620-22)
9. Light Guard if less than 8ft off floor (2510.1)
10. Fire Extinguisher Class ABC (Hung not on floor) (1206.1h)
11. Visual smoke detector in machine room (306.11 & 211.3b)
12. Heat detector or flow by sprinkler if present NFPA (72 Ch 3 3-8.15)
13. Sprinkler head guard (300.3)
14. GFI outlet (300.2 & 620-85)
15. No foreign wiring in machine room (300.3)
16. No foreign piping in machine room (300.3)
17. Machine room on same side of any earthquake joint (2410.1)
B. Survey Hoistway check the following:
1. Wrapped hoistway jambs w/over 1/16" to meet labeling requirements (Contractor) (300.11)
2. Sprinkler head guarded (300.3)
3. Smoke and heat detector in hoistway on locked access door w/screening door maximum 2' x 2' (306.11 & 300.3 300.2 & 101.3d3c 101.3d3b)
4. Hoistway vent if over 2 floors (300.1)
5. No recesses allowed (300.1)
6. Beam projections more than 2" (70-deg bevel) (300.1)
7. Set backs to be beveled or covered (300.1)
8. Minimum running clearance ¾" (300.9)
C. Pit Survey
1. Light switch 18 - 36" above sill (620-22)
2. Floor drain or sump required (no slanting of floor allowed, secondary containment of drum) (300.7)
3. Drains not to be connected to direct to sewer (300.7)
4. Sump cover to be flush with floor (300.7)
5. Sprinkler head guarded (300.3)
6. GFI outlet (300.7)
7. Lighting not less than 5ftc (300.7)
8. Light to be guarded and grounded (300.7)
D. Shunt Trip Disconnect
1. Shunt trip disconnect required if the building is sprinkled (Have installed of system mimic the tripping of the heat detector to show loss of the power to the controller.) (300.3)
E. Smoke Detector Testing
(Place car in automatic operation)
1. Smoke detectors are required in lobbies and machine room
2. Recall to main floor testing on elevator lobbies
Above main recall floor and (hoistway if sprinklers.)
(Trip all detectors above the recall floor and hoistway to assure recall to the main landing)
3. Recall to alternate floor testing of main lobby detector and machine room if at main landing. (Detector at the main recall floor and machine room if on same floor must send car to alternate location)
4. Smoke detectors cannot be self re-setting.

New Elevator Code CA State Elevators Only Commerical The access Key(s) for the elevator machine room and/or machinery space(s) shall be kept in the elevator pit. The key(s) shall be properly identifie, located near the pit stop switch and shall be accessible from the pit access door. In building with banks of multiple elevators, the key(s) shall be kept in the elevator pit with the lowest state identifiation number
